So it’s time to advertise and you may have an idea of what you want. Or not, that’s fine too. Whether your brand requires something edgy and different or middle-of-the-road and safe, I have teams of creatives who can make it effective AND affective.

The Campaign Shoot Process:

Firstly we need to establish goals. Your advertisements can do one thing well or several things poorly. Do you need branding as for a new business launch or refreshed logo? A call to action like a sale or new website? Do you need to communicate with existing customers or to attract new ones? When you engage my team for campaign shoot production we will brainstorm with you:

• Who is your brand (it’s a person, you know – it has an identity and it’s own attitude)?
• Who are your audience? How old are they? What do they like?
• What are you trying to communicate?  How can we best do this in an image?
• What will be your advertising strategy?  Magazines? Billboards?
• What is your product price point? Do you want to look exclusive or accessible?
• What, if any, previous branding needs to be considered?

Then we will:

• Conceptualise your campaign: Sketches, mood boards, lighting and story.
• Test the idea on some people removed from the process.
• Propose the model(s) we think will communicate best with your audience.
• Propose the creative team (photographer, make-up artist, hair stylist, fashion stylist) that will create our vision.
• Propose a set (studio, outdoor, on-location)
• Explain why we’ve reached these decisions.

On the day we:

• Set up.
• Steam garments if required.
• Direct the shoot (crack the whip).
• Cater (lunch, snacks and drinks).
• Ensure everything complies with OH&S and that all legally required breaks are taken.

After the shoot we:

Acting Showreel

I know most MUAs love to show off with body art, theatrical make-up, prosthetics, etc., but these skill sets are rarely required by my clients, so I probably won’t include them in your portfolio on my site, nor will they be taken into consideration when I’m contemplating representing you. This may change in the future if I expand into stage make-up, but for the moment at least this is how it must be.

As a rule, the best make-up in advertising and fashion is the make-up nobody notices (with exceptions, of course). Keep this in mind when assembling your portfolio.

If you are contacting me regarding representation as a Make-Up Artist please include a link to your online portfolio (website, modelmayhem, facebook, whatever) and a little bit of a blurb telling me who you’ve worked with and what you’ve done previously.

Keep in mind that there are thousands of MUAs in Melbourne and I’m only looking for the best ones, so only established artists with extensive portfolios with relevant content are likely to be considered.

The answer, of course, is “Yes”.

Online fashion retail is the newest craze in shopping and online stores are often shooting regularly (monthly, weekly or even daily) to maintain fresh stock and images for their shoppers.

Profit margins are often narrow for these businesses so it’s important to keep costs down.  Many online stores are combating the cost of models with the use of flat-lay shooting or mannequin shooting, but at the expense of the personal touch that a model can provide which connects with your audience on a deeper level.

Flatlay and mannequins, of course, are not a great idea or department stores would have developed a very different catalogue style many years ago.

Most jobs will fall somewhere in between where you will be asked to bring a few things of your own. For this reason you should maintain a model’s kit which is easy to carry around and contains all the essentials that will make you appear super organised and ready to work.  Even if you aren’t asked, you should bring this kit to every job, just in case.

A model’s kit should include:

• A nude bra – unpadded with removable straps.
• A nude, seamless g-string – as invisible as possible.
• Black heels – clean, comfortable and in good condition.
• Nude heels – clean, comfortable and in good condition.
• White singlet top – unbranded and ironed.
• Black singlet top – unbranded and ironed.
• Fitted jeans – ironed and not torn.
• Non-marking antiperspirant.
• Toothbrush and toothpaste.
• A small selection of hair ties and clips.

• A basic make-up kit with your appropriate colours.
• A straw – so you can drink without ruining your lip make-up.
• A bottle of water.
• A small supply of snack food like nuts, jubes or muesli bar.

This kit should be contained in an easy-to-carry bag.  These contents shouldn’t be too heavy and are all very useful to have with you on a shoot or catwalk.

It doesn’t matter where you are from, the only requirement is that you must be willing to travel. It is difficult to become a successful model and you will need to build a portfolio with amazing photographers and great fashion photographers are rarely (a few exceptions) found in rural areas due to the lack of fashion work in those areas.
If you are comfortable travelling to your nearest capital city for castings and jobs and are happy to communicate often by email and phone then there is no reason you can’t be a model living in a rural town.

Kathryn’s label, Beker, has produced a new range which is a modern take on 60s styling inspired by the space race, Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey and Bowie’s Space Oddity. The collection includes some pretty fantastic pieces which need to be touched and held to experience fully.

The look book shoot for the new collection pulled together the talents of photographer Chris Garbacz, MUA Tanya Guccione and new modelling talent Anna Furze.

Melissa’s new website and advertising material required some realistic shots of her with a happy couple on their wedding day.

For this shoot we needed two models (bride and groom), a photographer, make-up artist and stylist, all to create a warm, professional feel.
Megan was chosen for her previous work as a bridal model in various magazines and Casey for his rugged good looks.
Daniela Orlando brought her flair in styling the couple whilst Jacqueline Kalab worked her magic on hair and make-up for models and for Melissa.
Chris Garbacz produced the laughs and caught them on photograph in his own talented style.

The Brief:

My client is creating a new online project aiming to appeal to the same audience as the History Channel which has over 200 million viewers worldwide.

As part of the marketing of the website, the client will run a Youtube campaign during which multiple web-casts containing short stories of great moments in history will be read by a beautiful model in a fun bid to “make history sexy”.

The model would be branded as the face of the project and promoted across many reputable websites.
This would be a great way to build your popularity and make you a recognisable face.

The successful candidate will be required to attend a Melbourne studio to record the videos and will be paid $500 per day for their time.

Audition Instructions:

To audition for the role simply use your mobile phone, webcam or handycam to record a short video of yourself reading the script below. During your reading, emphasis should be placed on style, allure, flamboyance and theatricality. Feel free to add your own flavour to your performance to make it fun and memorable as the client is looking for a personality and look, not a boring newsreader.

The Script:

When in Doubt Amputate
The Battle of Waterloo in 1815, between Napoleon Bonaparte and an alliance led by Britain’s Duke of Wellington, was one of the most decisive battles of modern history.

Wellington won, but lost 29 percent of his army.

In one day of battle, 47,000 casualties occurred on a tiny 4 kilometre front in Belgium.

The British Army had 52 staff surgeons on the day, either at the Battle or at hospitals elsewhere.

In the field, each battalion of 600 men theoretically was allocated one regimental surgeon and two assistant surgeons.

The surgeons’ instruments included bullet forceps to grope for missiles, a punch to knock out teeth and a pair of strong nippers for trimming the ends of bones.

An RMO was paid 10 shillings a day, and in seniority ranked below the youngest ensign in the regiment.

Fought mostly over open country, there were three types of injury. Firstly, heavy macerating wounds from six, nine and 12 pound shot. Secondly, injuries from low velocity musket fire. Thirdly, cutting, chopping or piercing wounds from swords or bayonet.

About 500 amputations were carried out during the battle.

The surgeons’ motto was, ‘when in doubt, amputate.’

English aristocrat, Lord Fitzroy Somerset, had the presence of mind to call for his arm to be brought back after amputation, as he had forgotten to take off his signet ring.

This page endeavours to answer MOST of your “Why” questions and points out common reasons for rejection as well as useful hints to sway an agent.

Portfolio

One of the most common reasons for rejection is lack of portfolio.  As a model you need to make it as easy as possible for an agency to book you work and arriving with an impressive professional portfolio ready to show clients is a great way to start.   As agents we want to see that you can work with professionals and take their instruction.  Agents want to see that you have worked with people whose work we know and love.  We want to see that you are versatile and look great from any angle in any garment with any expression.

It is important to an agency that your portfolio look professional, commercial and expensive.  Glamour shots are rarely encouraged, with preference going to fashion and corporate images.

A great portfolio is by far the most powerful tool to generate you work.  An agency will publish those photos online and clients will be perusing those photos without anyone knowing. Often from there the client will phone and request by name the model with whom they wish to work.

Here is a great way to build a professional portfolio.

Polaroids

Polaroids (or snapshots or snaps) are another way to entice an agent to signing you.  It is in our nature to want to discover new models and help them grow into professionals.  In fact, a great set of Polaroids can sometimes be even more powerful in enticing a model agency than a portfolio.  Model Polaroids are quick and easy to take, require little preparation and almost no experience or skill.

Even if you have a perfect portfolio you should also make sure you have some excellent Polaroids as you will almost always have them requested.

Training

Having completed a modelling course is a huge incentive for an agency to work with you.  The fact that you have completed model training lets the agency know you have been trained to walk, trained to pose and know what to expect from your job as a model.  A good course will graduate you with realistic expectations of your modelling career, knowledge of what to expect from your agency as well as practice in front of the camera and on the catwalk.

Possibly more important than the course itself is the dedication and focus the course completion signifies.  Models who have completed model training courses are usually more focused, more realistic and more reliable than models who have not.

Height

Ever the issue, height is often a determining factor in deciding whether a model is appropriate for an agency.  Often clients will reject a model based solely on height.  Usually a shorter model will only be signed to an agency if he or she is perfect for either sports, bridal, swimsuit or other commercial photographic modelling.  This is often a difficult decision for agencies, especially if the model otherwise has a great look, but an agent must sign models for which there is industry demand.

Here is information on how tall models need to be.

Body Shape

The contentious and much-debated issue of body shape is one for which the modelling world is constantly criticised.   Again, though, sensibilities must be applied with consideration to industry demand and most agencies will reject models with unacceptable measurements.

In the modelling world size 12 is considered plus-sized modelling.  Although there is much positive press for plus sized models, demand for such in the fashion arena is low, so signing to an agency at size 12 or above is difficult.

Similarly for males, fitness is valued and muscle definition often an asset, but once you obtain the bodybuilder physique you are very hard to clothe, so likelihood of signing to a model agency drops.

Proportion is a factor also.  A female model should have a similar bust measurement to hip measurement.  If those measurements differ too greatly her proportions are usually unsuitable for modelling.

It should be noted here that agencies and the modelling world in general acknowledge that these requirements only apply to models and not to people overall.  For example just as having a height of 170cm does not make you short, having a size 12 body does not necessarily make you overweight.  These are rules only applied to models because that is the demand of the majority of clients.

Body Decoration

Know this: Almost always, tattoos are a deal breaker.  They are hard to hide and cause more problems in post production than are necessary.  They usually preclude you from any catwalk work, fashion shoots and almost definitely swimwear and lingerie shoots.

Piercings cause similar dramas.  Navel piercings, facial or other body piercings or ear piercings surplus to one in each ear lobe are usually unacceptable and, if removable should be done permanently.  Body piercings visible in portfolio photos usually render the image unusable.

Aesthetic

Your look is unique to you.  Other people share your dimensions, your height, sometimes they even have similar portfolio images to you, but your look is your own.

Agencies have a hard time explaining rejection based on a look, especially if all the other above points are ticked.  It’s hard to tell someone that their nose is too pointy or their eyes too close or ears too big or cheeks too puffy or skin too mottled or neck too short or…  any number of other reasons.  Sometimes is isn’t one of those things at all.  It might be just a feeling that clients won’t book that model.  It might be that the model looks too stiff in the photo or lacks confidence or has expressionless eyes or any number of other intangible reasons.

If you are rejected for your look it does not mean you are ugly; just that the agency doesn’t feel you will be booked for work.

Overall

It is important that you know that a model agency does not decide whether you are a model; only whether they want to work with you.  The agency’s responsibility is to find work for models, so they need to work with models for whom they are confident they can find work.

You can improve your chances by building a great portfolio including video reel, getting some clear Polaroids taken, keeping fit, eating healthy, maintaining your skin and being trained to walk, but even after that there are never any guarantees.

The most important thing with your modelling career, as with any career, is that you enjoy every second of it.  Love what you do and the rest is just details.

Why have I put this day together?
I have models constantly asking me to arrange free photo shoots to build their portfolio. This takes time and forces me to use up favours from photographers, MUAs and stylists. The alternative may be to source student or amateur photographers, but the result is usually something fairly uninspiring and so will rarely result in paid work.
Poor quality photos in a portfolio are worse than useless. The main reason models miss out on work is poor portfolio presentation. A cheap looking portfolio is quickly dismissed by clients.

What is the aim of this day?
The aim is to get you GREAT portfolio images, showing you in the way you are meant to be shown.
Importantly, you will gain a complete commercial portfolio, showing clients your ability to perform in different shoots with different professionals.
By using such an outstanding team of professionals you will be made to look confident and stunning, giving you the best possible chance of gaining quality, paid work from clients.

What do clients want to see?
Put yourself in the shoes of the client casting for a shoot.
You are paying all your professionals by the hour, so you want your shoot to run smoothly. You need to see that a model is professional, versatile and, importantly, can work well under pressure with a team who expects results. To show you this, you want to see commercial style shoots, i.e. shoots that appear to have been paid for by a client, as opposed to a model simply smiling against a white background; the hallmark of the amateur model.

Why is a video reel so important?
The digital age has changed everything. Now there is little reason to hold castings, because good quality images and video are able to be quickly streamed over the net. Clients are now starting to prefer casting by video reel because it means less time to organise, less stress in face-to-face rejection and can all be done in the comfort of their office.
As you can imagine, video reels are even more important when you are casting for jobs internationally. If you want to make it overseas, a great video reel is a MUST.

What will be in the video reel?
This day allows us to get video reel footage better than most. You will be filmed in a brief seated interview, with your voice continuing over smoothly cut footage of you backstage during make-up, during the shoot and walking.

The signing process happens in a few stages:

1) Web Application

By filling out in full the application form you are providing all the information needed to assess your theoretical suitability as a model.
This form requires your measurements, contact details, date of birth and a couple of basic images. From this it is possible to tell your height suitability, likelihood of generating interest and being asked to castings.
Most applicants are politely declined at this point and are given feedback only upon request.

2) Meeting

As a working model you are often representing your management, the client and yourself unsupervised. It is important that you have the right mindset and personality to be able to cope with the on-the-spot nature of modelling. It is also important that you present with appropriate posture and elocution.
Speaking with you in person is the only way to assess your expectations, attitude and demeanor.
The meeting takes place in an informal setting and is a good time for you to ask any questions, state any limitations or just to get to know your manager-to-be.
You may be asked to walk, pose for a polaroid shoot as well as answer a number of questions about yourself, your interests and your career intentions.
It is important to note at this stage that you are not expected to be perfect at walking, posing or at any other aspect. It is at this stage that your training requirements will be assessed, so just be yourself and be honest.
About half the applicants that reach stage two are politely declined after this point.

3) Test Shoot

How you look in professional photos is the single most important factor in determining marketability of a model.
You will need to develop a portfolio and in that portfolio you will need to look amazing, so the test shoot is used as a gauge of your potential. Feedback from the photographer and make-up artist are also important to ascertain professionalism of attitude and ability to follow direction on a shoot.
The photographs obtained on this shoot belong to you and will be used in the construction of your portfolio. As with any portfolio development activities, the cost of this shoot will be incurred by the model. As an indication of cost, most photographers do a half day shoot with ten fully edited photos for $800.
Most models who reach this stage are offered a contract.

4) Determination

It is at this point that your suitability is completely ascertained and you will be offered a contract for representation.

The purpose of a show reel is to show the client how the model moves, walks, speaks, and all the attributes of the model that cannot be displayed in still images. If a model is to become a brand spokesperson the client needs to know the model can present well whilst speaking, walking and in an interview scenario.

There are no strict rules for the production of a modelling video reel, but there should be a get-to-know-you style interveiw, a catwalk section and a filmed photo shoot to show the model working.

There is no set length for a video reel, but keeping it to below 2mins will allow the file size to remain reasonable whilst displaying enough of the model to interest the client.

Most Australian clients are hesitant to accept female fashion models under 173cm (or under 176cm in most cases internationally). At the upper end, clients are reluctant to use models who are over 180cm.

Commercial photographic models can sometimes make a career with stature as low as 165cm. This is because in photographic modelling it is more important to have good proportioning than height.

Male Models:

Male models are subject to the same expectations of above-average height.

Male models are expected to be at least 180cm and rarely more than 190cm.

The reason we don’t accept work experience placements is that the modelling industry is quite an unpredictable one. We usually don’t know our location or activities with more than a month’s notice. Given that highschool work experience programs require everything to be organised well in advance it’s just not practical for us to take part.

If you are excited enough about this industry to want experience outside of school requirements and with irregular hours, please type up a compelling email and we will consider your request.

In your portfolio you should include photos from professional shoots, test shoots, runway walks and any paid work.

If you have booked a portfolio shoot with a photographer and would like to know what looks to go for, the following three looks will give you a well-rounded portfolio:

1) Casual or sportswear

This is the commercial look. In these shots you should be acting personable, friendly, happy. Most catalogue modelling work will be chosen from these shots, so research department store brochures for your poses and expressions. Be sure not to take yourself too seriously with this look.

2) Swimwear or lingerie

This is usually the sexy look. Here you should be using whatever poses and expressions best suit you because there is little opportunity for distraction or cover-up. For flexible high fashion models it’s a great way to show off by distorting your body or, if the sultry poses are more your thing it’s an excellent time to use your curves to draw attention.

You don’t need to be an aspiring swimwear model or lingerie model to benefit from these shots in your portfolio. This look is critical for showing clients your body shape, definition, skin tone, etc. Be sure that the photographer gets any tattoos, scars or other permanent fixtures in the shot, because the client needs to be fully informed.

3) High fashion or formal

This look is all about class. Act as you would on a runway in front of press and onlookers at a collection launch. High fashion shoots should have slightly darker lighting, be far less commercial and should be the most artistic of all styles. Jutting elbows, distorted body and flamboyant fingers are all important tools in a high fashion model’s kit, so use them.

With these three looks your portfolio should be developed enough to start getting you work.

If you want to develop a more targeted portfolio then you should look at the publications you wish to appear in and try to get a modelling portfolio that replicates the look and feel of shots that appear in those publications. A great way to do this is to use a photographer who has been published in that magazine previously.

Modelling Polaroids are simple, honest snapshots intended to show clients the unaltered palette with which they will work.

The perfect modelling polaroid should consist of:
- Minimal make up
- Hair un-straightened and simply tied back if required
- Females should wear plain coloured bikini, underwear or similar **NO PADDING**
- Males should wear sports shorts, underwear or similar
- One pose should be simply standing front on, standing straight, hands by your side or on your hips, looking straight into the camera
- One pose should be the same but side-on
- Ensure that any tattoos, birth marks or other permanent features can be seen clearly

If you are asked to submit polaroids you should include:
- One head shot (from shoulders up) front-on
- One head shot in profile
- One full length front-on shot
- One full length shot facing the other way
- One 3/4 length (from knees up) front-on shot
- One 3/4 length side-on shot

Polaroids need not be taken by a professional photographer and may be taken by your agent upon meeting, or by a client at a casting.

Unfortunately it takes just as much time and effort to book a model for a free shoot as for a paid one, so it is important to ensure that some value is delivered if not money.

Priority for TFP work goes to:
- Established photographers updating their portfolio.
- Parades or shoots where significant exposure will result.
- Free jobs that will likely result in ongoing paid work.
- Budding photographers/designers/stylists/MUAs who are entering a competition or final assessments for their course.

Conditions:
1) “Model: *Model Name*, Mark Fitzgerald Management” must be credited on each image, wherever it is used.
2) Intended usage of the image must be clearly stated at the time of booking.
3) The image must not be used for direct commercial purposes unless otherwise agreed. This includes product packaging, brochures, advertising, look books, etc.
4) Absolutely no nudity or implied nudity unless otherwise agreed by both the management and the model.

- Shoot concept: The look, feel and theme of the shoot. If possible, include an image or two from which you are drawing inspiration.
- The team: Please let us know who you have lined up to help out. Sometimes it’s just a photographer and the model; that’s fine.
- A sample of your previous work.
